The Final Day (of College)

A car teeters off the edge of a cliff

waiting to fall into the jaws

of the dark abyss below

or rest its tires

safely on the soft ground

of the Earth.

You think if you breathe,

it’ll help

but it doesn’t.

It only sinks you deeper

into the jaws below.

You can feel the static around you

like a blanket.

Like the made up sheets

in hotel rooms

that suffocate you

when you climb into them.

Like big comforters

and weighted blankets

too big for your body.

Suffocation leads to asphyxiation

leads to death

and where does death go

other than down below?

You don’t think you know

who you are anymore.

Find the balance between your new self and the old.

When they meet,

cracks form in the sidewalk

of your heart.

You don’t know which path to take

so you take the one

with no people

even though the one thing you’ve learned

is that you need people.

The two dualities of your heart meet

and create a ripple in your space time

you don’t know how to fix.

Only decks of cards

and purple and blue masquerade masks

and huge black platform shoes

lead the way

to your own self destruction.

You look inside yourself

and don’t find you.

Instead, a battle is there

clouding your vision.

The static hugs you

in a hug you don’t want to be in.

You don’t know how to save yourself

so you don’t do anything at all.
